In Sarasota, Dr. Marmaro’s chemistry class performed an experiment to test the antacid capabilities of two, commercially available, antacid tablets. To do so, students pulverized the tablets and added them to a known amount of hydrochloric acid. This is the identical acid that is formed in our stomachs to aid in digestion.

Students will allow the antacid to neutralize some of the acid. Following that, they will titrate the excess acid not neutralized by the tablets. Knowing the starting amount of acid, the students  subtract what was not neutralized to reveal how much acid was successfully neutralized. They performed this experiment in triplicate for each brand of tablet, calculate the amount of acid neutralized and compare each brand to determine which is better at performing their job.
