Legal Research and Writing

Learn to research and analyze statutory law, case law, and regulatory law

Cynthia Sokol

Boynton Beach, FL

Law is a great passion of mine. I guess having an interest in a specific area does help you to succeed. The guidance of Professor Lowenthal was a determining factor. She lets you know which areas are your weak points. For a while it was case briefs for me in particular. Now I feel I can write a brief in little time and actually understand the concept of the case. I will be forever grateful to Professor Lowenthal and Keiser University for this opportunity to succeed.

Michael Barr - eCampus studentAs I have been taking my current class, I have had time to reflect on all the classes I have taken in the past year or so. I have come to realize, respect, and appreciate the amount of interaction that you showed to all the students you taught in Research and Writing and in Real Property Law. I sincerely doubt that without the interaction that I as a student received from you, that I would not thus far have the understanding or the realization of the importance and necessity of the research and writing class.

I believe that class is the foundation of any legal position whether it is a judge, lawyer, or paralegal, and without that class, not many of us would be very effective in our capacities. From you, I feel and honestly believe that I received at least 70% more interaction, and more communication than I have from any other teacher thus far in any class. Of course, I in no way mean this as a slight on any of my other mentors, they do their job effectively and I would not be where I am today without them. It is just obvious that there is not as much interaction with any of them, and I for one feel that you take pride in your job and your students. Some examples of what I mean is that: (1) You participated in the threaded discussions way more and as much as the students did; (2) You offered chat sessions; (3) You afforded office hours to the students in which they were able to ask questions in the "Asks" section of each week; (4) You showed a great interest in your students' learning, and whether or not they (including me) understood the material; and (5) You kept the line open after the classes were finished, allowing students to keep in touch with you. That shows a great deal of care and interest in my opinion and I feel compelled to tell you that I appreciate it!

Thank you,
Michael Barr

Criminal Law/Procedure

Substantive and procedural criminal law for the Paralegal

Nanci Wentworth

Cooperstown, NY

I have thoroughly enjoyed being an online student with Keiser College. My decision to pursue the field of paralegal studies was one of the best decisions I have made. I have always been interested in how and why the law works the way it does at its various levels.  Criminal Law and Procedures kept me on the edge of my seat for I was interested in every aspect of the class. I found myself totally immersed in the learning and understanding of what elements must actually be present for a crime to exist. My understanding of the law was broadened in learning the concepts for the differences in defense applications and why Factual, Statutory, and/or Constitutional defenses can or cannot be used as a defense. The laws of our land can be very intimidating, mystifying, and complex if they are not fully explained and understood.  From the very beginning, Criminal Law and Procedures instilled in me an insight as to why, local, state, and national constitutions and laws were placed with such great emphasis as procedural and substantive safeguards. For, these carefully placed safeguards were and are designed to help in the assurance of fair trials set before impartial tribunals so that it is possible for every defendant to stand equal before the law. Professor Lowenthal created a great opportunity for me to learn and expand my knowledge in this particular area of legal study.

Contracts

Contract law and how to draft different contractual documents

Kelly Durain

Dixon, IL

Contracts was a very informational and an educational course. I know this will help me in my career as a Paralegal due to the fact that most of the things that you do are in some form of a contract for the attorney. I learned all of the different types of contracts that are needed as well as what needs to be in the contract to keep from violating the Statute of Frauds.  It also helped to give me a better understanding and what the legal aspect of a contract is as well as what they get out of the common language unless it is completely writing out what is wanted of the parties.

My name is Kelly M. Durain and I am twenty-three years old. I reside in Dixon, Illinois. I am a  single woman, caring with my mother, who has health conditions.  Thanks to Keiser University for having online courses because I was able to work full-time during the day, take care of my mom on the days that she is sick, and still get an education by signing online after a day’s work.

Wills, Trusts, and Estates

Probate & Estate law including drafting a will

Deva Greene

Tampa, FL

I found the course on Wills, Trusts and Estates at Keiser invaluable. It expanded the scope of my daily practice by including a greater understanding of trust agreements in my real estate transactions involving estates. I work in a law firm that specializes in Trust and Estates, as well as real estate and commercial litigation. I can now appreciate the expertise required to complete estates and trusts. I found this course stimulating and beneficial to my practice.

Ethics & Family Law

Legal and ethical responsibilities of the Paralegal  & substantive family law and procedural requirements

Rebecca Ribordy
Stockton, California

About six months ago I finally decided to go back to school. I've always had an interest in Law, but being a single mother and having to work-full time didn't leave me much room for returning to school, but then I found Keiser University!  Keiser has a great  on-line program with excellent Professors.

Professor Lowenthal did an outstanding job in making Family Law extremely interesting and exciting. The guidance and the support that you receive from the Professors and your fellow students really makes everything come together. I couldn't imagine school any other way....I hope that you take the first step in reaching your goals by joining Keiser University too....believe me, its worth it!

Business Entities and Bankruptcy

Organization, operation, and law of business entities & Bankruptcy including drafting Articles of Incorporation

Margo Ackerman

Sarasota, FL

I felt the same about the business class as I did the other online classes I took. Professor Kent did a superb job instructing the class. The material was appropriate for the level of learning, assignments were geared towards 'real world' situations, and he motivated the class to do well. I believe if you have an involved, well educated instructor, the class is enjoyable and no different than on campus classes. I prefer online to classroom due to my work schedule and family life.

Roberta Hazelton

Marietta, OH

The classes at Keiser University have helped me tremendously in my current job.  I work for a civil litigation attorney in Ohio and the paralegal classes have helped me understand many aspects of the court system.  The classes have also showed me a better way to handle my job and the clients that I encounter at my office.

My ultimate goal is to start a paralegal consulting service where I will contract with attorneys and law firms for special jobs and short-term assignments.  When starting your own business one major decision is how you will hold your business (i.e.  sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, etc.).  The Business Entities and Bankruptcy class that I took showed me the various types of business entities, as well as advantages and disadvantages of each.  I feel that the Business Entities and Bankruptcy class helped me make informed decisions as to how and when is the best time to start my business.
