Dr. Brian Esterling

Dr. Brian Esterling is the Department Chairperson for the Graduate Psychology Programs, which comprise concentrations in community mental health counseling, industrial/organizational, and general psychology. As a licensed clinical psychologist with significant business education and experience, he is very aware of the interpersonal dynamics and qualities that allow students and faculty to achieve at the highest levels across each of these disciplines and in a variety of settings. It is these qualities of teamwork, communication (written and verbal), listening, and creative thinking that promote effective teams and best practice outcomes (either in the counseling, business, or educational settings).

Having a wide range of interests, he began his career specializing in behavioral medicine at the University of Miami and Ohio State University School of Medicine, publishing many articles on the role of chronic stress and immune system modulation. More recently, Dr. Esterling’s interests have focused on the intersection of business and mental health where he has experience in the private business sector, responsible for controlling costs and financial risk through clinical utilization management procedures for Fortune 500 companies. These latter experiences has led to questions pertaining to the role of alternative payment strategies (e.g., value based payment) on quality clinical outcomes (e.g., readmission rates and/or compliance with aftercare appointments and treatment prescriptions).

On a personal note, Dr. Esterling has been competitively rowing over the last 35 years for several rowing clubs along the East coast. As such, he has adopted many of the traditions of rowing into his professional and personal life. The belief that we must be in synch and pulling together, communicating with a common voice, and not giving up in times of challenge, are all traits that transcend counseling, industrial/organizational, and general psychological principles, and which will prepare students and faculty to perform at the highest levels.
