The Medical Assisting program at Lakeland is affiliated with the Special Olympics. Four students recently participated in an event held at the ESPN sports complex in  Orlando. Students volunteered as  members of the “sun patrol”  team and each student served as a mentor for a SO athlete. Lakeland students and their athletes provided free sun screen to park guests and provided education on the risks of excessive sun exposure. The team ultimately handed out more than 2000 packets of sunscreen all while keeping athletes motivated and enduring the Florida heat. Students Jamie Powell, Sara O’Connor, Karina Enriquez and Celestine Alicia each stated it was one of the most rewarding things they have ever done and each are looking forward to the next event.
