Titled “Documentation in Healthcare”, the nursing department hosted the first symposium in Melbourne’s new auditorium.  Guest speakers from Wuesthoff Rockledge included: Mae Hafizi MSN, Risk Manager, Shannon Cathcart MSN, Clinical Nurse Educator and Kamen Jenkins, Government and Employee Affairs representative.   Also presenting was Alissa Watts, BSN, JD, In-House Counsel for Greystone Healthcare Management.

The panel presented formal presentations on topics including, Risk Management, multiple regulatory bodies, legal implications of accurate and proper documentation, and the importance of “owning your own orientation, practice and documentation”, as Ms. Hafizi so passionately emphasized.

Panel speakers inspired students to ask many questions.   Students actively participated in real scenario-based vignettes by deciding what the nurse should do next.  This exercise enabled students to put into practice much of what they are learning.

Wuesthoff presented door prizes and Keiser Admissions staff was on hand to answer questions about advanced degrees available at KU.

The nursing department hopes to plan a repeat of this successful event with additional relevant topics.  All speakers voiced a desire to return to participate.
