The Orlando campus Occupational Therapist Assistant students conducted Wheelchair Races to build morale, address team building within the program, and give students a first-hand experience as to how environmental barriers affect patients that utilize wheelchairs for functional mobility. The students were on teams and participated in a relay race where they were required to navigate an obstacle course containing: use of a gait belt as the “baton” that had to be passed from teammate to teammate prior to doing the course, retrieving items with a reacher, navigating over a speed bump, navigating in-and-out of cones, and wheeling backwards for 50 feet.
