Top Questions About Earning a Forensic Investigations Degree

Can I study forensic science online at Keiser University?

The Bachelor of Science in Forensic Investigations requires on-campus attendance due to the extensive laboratory work, hands-on training with forensic equipment, and practical crime scene investigation experience built into the curriculum. The forensic investigation program also offers a hybrid learning option. Contact an admissions counselor to find out what class schedule best fits your needs.

What makes this program different from a criminal justice degree?

The forensic investigations program focuses specifically on the scientific analysis of physical evidence and crime scene processing, while criminal justice programs typically emphasize law enforcement operations, corrections, courts, and the broader criminal justice system. Forensic investigation students take extensive natural science courses including biology, chemistry, and physics along with specialized forensic science applications. Criminal justice students study criminology, law enforcement procedures, and justice system operations.

What careers can I pursue with a forensic investigations degree?

Graduates pursue careers as crime scene investigators, crime scene technicians, forensic technicians in crime laboratories, evidence technicians for local law enforcement, forensic identification specialists, and criminal investigators. Career opportunities exist with government agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, private companies conducting investigations, medical examiner offices, and specialized forensic laboratories.

Can I transfer credits from another institution?

Yes, Keiser University accepts transfer credits for undergraduate and graduate-level programs. Our admissions team will work with you to review your transcripts and determine your transfer eligibility. Credits transfer based on several factors including accreditation and course equivalency. Learn more about credit transfer requirements and eligibility requirements.

What type of background check do I need?

Students entering the forensic investigations program must undergo a level 2 criminal background check. This requirement reflects the nature of careers in law enforcement and criminal investigations where forensic investigators work closely with police officers, handle sensitive evidence, and may eventually seek employment with government agencies that require security clearances.

Does this program prepare me for graduate studies in forensic science?

Yes. The Bachelor of Science in Forensic Investigations (Investigations Concentration) includes the prerequisite coursework in natural and physical sciences necessary for graduate programs in forensic science. Students complete extensive biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics courses along with specialized forensic applications that provide the scientific foundation needed for advanced study in forensic science programs.

What laboratory equipment will I use?

Students gain hands-on experience with forensic photography equipment, fingerprint identification and development systems, crime scene digital image processing software, biological evidence collection tools, and evidence documentation technology. The program includes training with equipment and techniques currently used by crime scene investigators and forensic technicians in law enforcement agencies and crime laboratories.

How long does the program take to complete?

The forensic investigations degree takes approximately 38 months to complete for students who attend full-time and start with no transfer credits. Degree completion time represents an estimate, not intended as a guarantee, and is dependent on transfer credits accepted and courses completed each term.

What communication skills will I develop?

The forensic science program emphasizes both written and verbal communication skills essential for forensic professionals. You’ll practice report writing to document evidence collection and analysis, develop presentation skills for court testimony, and learn to communicate effectively with law enforcement officers and other criminal justice professionals. Courses in forensic communications prepare you to explain complex scientific findings to diverse audiences including attorneys, judges, and juries.

Can this degree lead to federal law enforcement careers?

While the forensic investigations degree provides strong preparation for federal forensic positions, becoming a federal agent typically requires additional qualifications beyond the bachelor’s degree. Many federal agencies employ forensic technicians and criminal investigators with forensic science backgrounds. The degree gives you the technical skills and knowledge of criminal evidence that federal agencies value. Some graduates pursue additional education or gain work experience before applying to federal positions.

How much does this degree cost?

Tuition at Keiser University varies by degree program. Keiser University offers financial aid, military and veteran benefits, scholarships, and tuition reimbursement to those who qualify. For more information about the degree cost, please contact an admissions advisor. Get more information about Keiser University’s tuition and costs.
