Adrian Mateo, a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science student, shares a powerful journey shaped by resilience and purpose. A U.S. Army veteran who served five years, including a tour in Iraq, Adrian faced uncertainty after leaving the military and explored different career paths, even earning a culinary degree. However, service-related injuries made long, physically demanding work unsustainable, pushing him to find a new direction.
He discovered his passion in exercise science, choosing the program for its strong reputation and rigorous, science-based curriculum. Adrian credits the challenging coursework with helping him build real knowledge and confidence in the field. He also found meaningful support and mentorship from his program director, a fellow veteran who understands the unique experiences of military students and sets a strong example of leadership.
Balancing school, work, and family life as a husband and father has been one of Adrian’s greatest challenges, but a strong support system has helped him stay on track. Currently working as a CrossFit coach, he has already applied what he’s learned to become more effective in his role.
Looking ahead, Adrian plans to pursue a career as an exercise physiologist, working with cardiac, pulmonary, and other special populations. Guided by his belief that “movement is medicine,” he is committed to helping others recover from injury, manage disease, and improve their overall quality of life.
