RSC Scholars’ Exchange: Wearable Surface EMG Research

November 5 @ 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Older adult standing with support from a walker in a home setting.

Wearable Surface EMG Median Frequency Behavior During a Functional Sit-to-Stand Task in Medically Stable Older Adults

Join the Research and Scholarship Collaborative (RSC) Scholars’ Exchange for a research presentation by Erika Gustafsson, a physiotherapist and Master of Science student in Exercise and Sport Science at Keiser University Flagship.

This presentation explores how wearable surface electromyography (EMG) technology measures muscle activity during a functional sit-to-stand task in adults aged 50–79. The study examines age-related differences in EMG median frequency and highlights why these measurements should be interpreted in the context of functional performance rather than used alone as indicators of neuromuscular fatigue.

Participants will:

  • Learn how wearable surface EMG technology measures muscle activity during functional movement.
  • Explore the role of EMG median frequency in studying muscle activity during a sit-to-stand task.
  • Review findings on age-related differences in muscle activity among medically stable older adults.
  • Understand why individual variability matters when interpreting EMG measurements.
  • Consider the implications of these findings for assessing functional performance and neuromuscular fatigue.
