Admissions

Admission to the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is based on a review of application materials by the program faculty. Strong applicants show evidence of academic success and potential for success in graduate school (e.g., evidenced by GPA, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation), potential success in developing interpersonal relationships in the counseling context, and an openness to personal and professional development. Preference is given to individuals who possess knowledge of mental health issues and aptitude to work in counseling through coursework, research experience, and/or volunteer or professional work experiences.

Applicants should submit the following materials:

  • Submission of a completed Graduate School Application
  • Submission of official transcripts showing successful completion of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Submission of official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test scores. Scores must be from within five years of application.*
  • Submission of a two- to three-page Personal Goal Statement indicating the applicant’s reasons for undertaking graduate study in mental health counseling, personal attributes, and future goals.
  • Submission of three letters of recommendation. Letters should be from individuals who can address the applicant’s academic and professional potential.
  • Submission of a résumé or curriculum vitae.
  • Successful criminal background check.

Top applicants are invited to interview with the department faculty. The interview is a required part of the admissions process. Applicants invited to the interview should keep in mind that an interview does not assure admission. Keiser University reserves the right to determine in its sole discretion whether an applicant is suitable for admission to the program.

Applicants should be aware that many agencies and credentialing bodies require a criminal background check as a prerequisite for practicum or internship placement. Having been convicted a felony, and some misdemeanors, may prevent the student from being licensed or from working or completing a practicum or internship in a school or agency.

* Note: Requirement for GRE scores may be waived for applicants with an overall undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, or completion of a previous graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
