United States Army Retired Staff Sergeant Graduate Yolande Crosby said she is thankful to support fellow Veterans as part of her position as a Program Support Assistant at the Lakeland, Florida Vet Center.
“One of the most meaningful parts of my role is acting as a liaison between Veterans, clinical staff, and community partners – helping clients navigate services and access the care they’ve earned. Being part of this mission allows me to give back to those who have served, and that’s something I value deeply,” said Crosby, a Keiser University Lakeland Campus graduate, of her efforts to facilitate timely, compassionate, and efficient service.
It was the logistics field experiences she gained as a U.S. Military Supply Sergeant that first ignited her passion to lead and manage, said Crosby, who served for 20 years.
“The role sparked my interest in understanding the broader operations of an organization. After transitioning out of the military, I was motivated to deepen my knowledge of business as a whole. I began by earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management, which provided me with a solid foundation across various aspects of business operations. Building on that, I chose to pursue a master’s degree in organizational leadership to gain a more comprehensive and strategic perspective on leading within complex organizational structures. Each step in my academic journey has been driven by a desire to expand my understanding and effectiveness in the business world,” she said.
Crosby shared that in November 2018, with support from Keiser University Business Program Director Dr. Tracy Whitfield, Veterans Liaison Cassi Oggero, and Veterans Center Director and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) Guiline Felix, she was able to enroll in the Veterans Administration Work-Study Program.
“The opportunity led to a pivotal moment in my career after the military, as I was offered a position to continue serving Veterans, their families, and the greater Polk County community as a Program Support Assistant. The role has allowed me to apply my academic learning in a meaningful, real-world setting while continuing my commitment to public service,” reflected Crosby.
Now thriving in her role, Crosby says her Keiser University learning experience has been instrumental in jump-starting her professional goals.
“Through engaging lectures, meaningful group interactions, and insightful discussions, particularly under the guidance of professors like Dr. Whitfield at the Lakeland campus. I gained valuable perspectives on the business world beyond my military background,” she said.
The extracurricular activities were of value as well.
Having served as President and Secretary of the campus’s international honor society Delta Mu Delta (DMD), Crosby shared that she’s thankful for the valuable experience she’s gained in coordinating and communicating chapter events, fostering member engagement, and supporting academic excellence within the organization.
“These roles have allowed me to grow as a leader while contributing to the success and visibility of our chapter,” said Crosby, while adding that she embraces the organization’s Greek namesake of “Dia Matheseos Dynamis”. Translating to “Through Knowledge, Power,” the phrase signifies the ability to manage conscientiously for social and economic good.
Delta Mu Delta is an international honor society that recognizes and rewards academic excellence in business administration programs at institutions accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
