Keiser University Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program students recently enjoyed assisting Miami Achievement Center patients as part of their Therapeutic Interventions for Individuals, Groups, and Population course.
Led by OTA faculty members Colleen Blankenship and Marlene Guerrero, the hands-on experience at the Miami Youth Fair provided the opportunity for students to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting while serving as a platform to understand the broader impact of their work on individuals and the community and in serving diverse populations.
“Participation in such events fosters collaboration between participants and mental health professionals in the Miami-Dade area, increasing a sense of community and mutual respect. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, Keiser OTA students acquire valuable insights into the multifaceted nature of community-based health care, equipping them with tools to advocate for inclusive practices in their communities. This experience not only enriches their understanding of mental health but also cultivates empathy and resilience, empowering them to effect positive change and champion inclusivity in society,” said Blankenship.
The ongoing collaboration continues to foster positive change.

Founded with the mission of furthering the independence of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the Miami Achievement Center was Established in 1962 by a group of concerned family members and friends of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization provides opportunities for clients to become more productive, self-fulfilled, and happier through its multifaceted program offerings.
Keiser University’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Associate of Science degree prepares students to work as occupational therapy assistants under the direct supervision of a licensed occupational therapist. Occupational therapy is the art and science of helping people gain skills needed to become independent in daily living activities. Students learn the therapeutic use of occupations which include self-care, work, and play/leisure activities to maximize independent function, enhance development, prevent disability, and maintain health. Intervention strategies may include adaptations to a task or environment or compensatory approaches to facilitate clients’ achievement of maximum independence.

My instructors believed in me. They were more than instructors, they tried to get to know you as a person and tried to understand your goals so they could push you towards them. Student services helped me find a job before I even graduated. Everyone was dedicated to my overall success.
