As a first-year Keiser University Fort Lauderdale Campus student nurse, Jade Marulanda has been immersing herself in every aspect of the program, including research. When the opportunity to explore the factors that impact the mental health of professionals arose, she quickly seized it.
Faced with the assignment as part of her Nursing Research for Evidence-Based Practice class, Marulanda, a Keiser University Fort Lauderdale Campus learner, delved into the science behind sleep and its effects on the human body, specifically relating to nursing students.
Research Assignment Addresses an Age-Old Challenge
“One of the things I struggled with the most was my sleep schedule and finding a way to stay on top of my studies while getting enough rest. When the assignment arose, I thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss, especially since so many people around me were facing the same dilemma,” recalled Marulanda.
When presented with the paper titled “The Impact of Sleep on Immune Function and Mental Health in Nursing Students: A Systematic Review,” Professor Annie Clavon assisted Marulanda as she sought publication.
Mentor Helps Guide Publication
“I’m incredibly grateful for the guidance and support I’ve received from Professor Clavon. Her encouragement, especially during the research and publishing process, helped me grow both personally and professionally. Her belief in my potential reminded me of the kind of nurse I hope to become, one who lifts others and makes a lasting impact,” she said. “With her encouragement and guidance, I was able to move forward with the publishing process,” said Marulanda, of the StuNurse Nationwide by Thinknurse.com article published in October 2025.
Family Members Inspire Service
Marulanda thanks those who support her journey. Her grandmother, Libia Beydoun imparted special care as she guided and inspired her to ‘impact many in the best way possible.’ “I chose to pursue a degree in nursing because of my deep passion for patient-centered care. I believe nursing goes beyond treating illness; it involves caring for the whole person by recognizing and responding to their physical, emotional, and psychological needs with empathy, respect, and dignity. My goal is to advocate for my patients, ensure their voices are heard, and deliver care that is both compassionate and evidence-based,” said Marulanda, who plans to focus on pediatric nursing.
Keiser’s ‘Students First’ Approach Makes all the Difference
Keiser’s streamlined admissions process, convenient location, and support of graduates who enter the workforce are just some of the factors that attracted Marulanda, a Miami, Florida resident. “As someone who already holds a bachelor’s degree, I appreciated that Keiser offered a direct and efficient path toward becoming a nurse. Their practical approach to education and career-focused programs gave me confidence that I could begin making a meaningful impact in the nursing field as soon as possible,” she said.
Surrounding oneself with others who encourage and motivate can make all the difference, said Marulanda.
“Having a staunch support system of mentors and peers, along with staying grounded in your purpose, can make a meaningful difference when challenges arise. Lastly, trust in the value of the skills you build throughout the journey; they often prepare you in ways you won’t fully see until later,” she smiled.

The instructors at Keiser University impacted my life. They believed in my ability to become a great graphic designer, regardless of how I felt about my skills. KU helped to prepare me for the real world and got me to where I am today.
