With a heart for healing, lifting, and supporting those who are vulnerable, Keiser University E-Campus student Veteran Missy Melvin is pursuing her goal of caring for others. While serving in the United States Army for over 12 years, Melvin shared that it was the Iraqi children and elderly she encountered, and the conditions they faced, that inspired her vision to open a medical group home.

Having served in the United States Army from 2000-2012 as a Specialist, Melvin served in Iraq from 2008-2009. One of just two females in the battalion to drive an Iraqi armored security vehicle, she also managed 120 trucks during an explosion. The experience helped prepare her for her later position as a Certified Nursing Assistant focused on trauma and behavioral health.

Following her military service, Melvin and her husband, Jaime Morales, settled in their hometown of Ocala, Florida. There, they raised their three children and were eventually asked to provide kinship care for a family member.

That experience inspired them to enroll in a foster care fast-track program, which served as groundwork to care for 12 children.

“It felt like the right path. Supporting youth and helping them build a better life has become a meaningful part of my purpose,” said Melvin, who is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Health Services Administration.  “If I could offer any advice to students, it would be to remember to take deep breaths when needed, stay organized, and have a clear plan. With time, consistency, and determination, they can accomplish anything. Never give up,” she said.
