The nursing program in Melbourne, conducts different types of simulations in order to get students prepared for situations that may arise.  In this simulation, the instructor utilizes her acting skills as an over bearing parent.  Ms. Lugo plays the role of a mother that is very concerned about her son and is not comfortable with the nurses.  Simulations like this prepares pediatric nurses to utilize their therapeutic communication skills and turn situations like this one into a positive outcome.  Students are briefed before the simulation starts and debriefed after it is completed.  During the debriefing process, students will analyze the simulation and share what worked and did not work, as well as how they felt.  This realistic type of learning allows our nursing students to develop better communications skills and give their patients better care.
