The students arrived in the morning treated to breakfast before diving into two groups to view the demonstrations by the Surgical Technology program and the Medical Assisting program.  Surgical Technology students demonstrated an exploratory laparotomy, which is a surgical operation where the abdomen is opened and the abdominal organs examined for injury or disease.  Students became a part of the surgical observation group by wearing surgical masks to protect the “patient.” The procedure was explained by the instructor Glorimar Calderon as the surgical students performed the procedure. The groups then switched to the Medical Assisting lab where they were demonstrating  Phlebotomy, the practice of drawing blood from patients and taking the blood specimens to the laboratory to prepare for testing. A phlebotomy technician is an important member of the clinical laboratory team.  Finally  the students were treated to pizza for lunch before boarding their bus for the trip back to their campus.
