Collegiate student athletes operate within a uniquely demanding environment. They balance the pressures of competition, academics, and personal development. While institutions provide a range of support services, including mental health services, academic resources, and financial assistance, we still know surprisingly little about how athletes actually perceive them. As a result, it remains unclear how those perceptions influence overall well being.
This presentation introduces the development and validation of the Student Athlete Resource Inventory (SARI). The tool is multidimensional and designed to capture the context specific resources athletes rely on throughout their collegiate experience. Specifically, the findings identify five distinct resource domains that shape life satisfaction. In addition, the results reveal important differences across gender, race, sport type, and academic year.
Overall, this work offers a new framework for understanding well being in collegiate athletics. It also provides practical insight for those interested in equity, support systems, and applied research in college sport.
