My Favorite Class to Teach at Keiser University College of Golf is “Strategies for Success”

Success is a Choice is the title of a book written by Rick Pitino in 1997, and in my opinion, no truer words have ever been written (regardless of Mr. Pitino’s recent transgressions). I have the privilege of teaching a class titled “Strategies for Success” to a diverse group of first semester students on the Keiser University Flagship Campus. Getting to know these students has been exciting and motivating for me, and being able to share the accumulation of seven decades of experience with them has been rewarding. I look back on my college days and wish I had been given the exposure to concepts that are covered in this class. The keys to success start with the textbook, P.O.W.E.R Learning and Your Life, by Robert Feldman, in which he covers topics such as: 1) Discovering your learning styles, 2) Time management, 3) Effective study habits, 4) Decision making and problem solving, and 5) Diversity and relationships. Additionally, I include presentations on the following books:

1) Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck, 2) The Talent Code and The Little Book of Talent by Daniel Coyle, 3) Talent is Overrated by Geoff Colvin, 4) Mastery by George Leonard, 5) The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, 6) The Willpower Instinct by Dr. Kelly McGonigal, and 7) GRIT by Dr. Angela Duckworth.

I augment these presentations with hands-on activities in almost every class period, because, as my friend Ken Martin always says, “the one who is doing the work is doing the learning.” I also show brief motivational video clips from YouTube to support the concepts listed above. It’s amazing to watch these students rise to the challenge of the class objectives and produce exceptional work for their young ages. They truly are choosing to succeed!
