Forensic Investigations students take part in presumptive drug testing.  The “NIK” kits produce a colorimetric reaction when a small drug sample is introduced to a chemical reagent within a plastic pouch.   A positive color change indicates the presence of a particular narcotic (heroin, cocaine, marijuana, meth).  This process assists law enforcement with probable cause to seize narcotics and make arrests.  The narcotics once lawfully seized, should also be sent to a forensic laboratory for a confirmatory test.
