Keiser University Miami hosts free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Preparation Program through April 15

MIAMI, Fla.— As Tax Day 2020 approaches, Keiser University Miami will host a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to aid members of the community in preparing their 2020 returns. This is the eighth-straight year KU Miami has hosted the program which offers a multitude of free tax-prep options to members of the community at no charge.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sponsors the VITA program which offers free tax preparation (Federal, State and Local) to qualifying individuals that make $55,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

Keiser volunteers, who include accounting faculty and students, will provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing. Taxpayers also have an option to prepare their own free simple federal tax return using web-based tax preparation software under supervision from a member of the Keiser team. To have a return prepared by a volunteer, members of the public are required to show a valid photo identification, Social Security card, W-2s, 1099 forms, a copy of last year’s tax return, and any other information and forms concerning income and expenses for 2019.

“Keiser University Miami is proud to provide free tax preparation for the members of our community through our VITA program,” said Lorraine Beach, campus president at Keiser University Miami. “This is a win-win in that local residents receive assistance filing their tax returns while our student and graduate volunteers gain valuable experience and training in tax preparation.”

Keiser Miami faculty and student volunteers have been IRS certified and have trained for months to provide this service. All volunteers in the VITA program must take the Standards of Conduct training and pass the certification test. Students must pass the applicable course test—Basic, Advanced, Military, or International to perform these duties.

Appointments are not required, and Spanish-speaking assistance is available.

Keiser University Miami’s VITA program is available to the public twice a week through Wednesday, April 15, 2020 on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Keiser University Miami is located 2101 Northwest 117th Avenue, Miami, FL, 33172
