As part of a community partnership with ‘YLakeland’ KU freshman were given an opportunity to cultivate their knowledge of the city and learn about the local economy. YLakeland is an initiative of the Lakeland Economic Development Council designed to connect young professionals with local employers and community events. This year, freshman from each of the local colleges and universities partnered for the initiative. Five KU students who were hand selected have been participating in an ongoing 16 week course. The students have enjoyed a variety of activities designed to promote local businesses, arts, and culture. The students enjoyed behind the scenes tours of prominent local businesses, went on a food tour, and learned from several local leaders in the community. The students have reported that the program has not only given them a sense of pride in their city, but has also encouraged them to consider keeping their talents local when they begin their job search.
