Keiser University Legal Studies graduate Sergio Ruiz is now applying the knowledge he’s gained toward a profession as a paralegal while also incorporating further study as he works toward his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
So far it has been a vibrant professional journey for Ruiz. A former ballroom dance instructor for 15 years, he is a first-generation American who eventually embraced the motivation to work toward a career in the field of law after witnessing those he loves navigate naturalization issues while immigrating to the United States.
Now as the first in his family to go to college, he hopes to lessen the load for new immigrants by helping them integrate into society by assisting them with legal issues, successful completion of naturalization tests, removal of occupational licensing barriers, and more.
“Imagine the daunting task of not only returning to school but also going through a major career change,” he reflected, while also sharing the meaning and reward the new focus has provided along with his appreciation for quickly landing a position as a Legal Clerk at a nearby law firm. “As is true with any profession, success requires effort. And while successful lawyers share many common traits, they may rely on a distinct body of law. Nevertheless, great lawyers know their area of practice. Some of this knowledge comes from experience. Some of it comes from education,” he said.
Keiser University’s traditional Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies program trains students for careers in law and law-related fields (business, government and criminal justice) and also prepares students to pursue a law degree. Students learn the necessary information and skills for successful integration into a law office atmosphere. They also learn the ways in which the law impacts most professional fields. The program permits students to take up to six elective courses, three of which must come from the Legal Studies curriculum, and may also provide students with the opportunity for an internship.
