Radiation Therapy students participated in a mask-making lab on Thursday, using thermoplastic material and a hot water bath to simulate real-world therapeutic processes and to gain insight from potential patients’ points of view. During daily radiation therapy treatment, it is necessary to ensure that the patient will be in exactly the same position every day, so patients receiving radiation to the head and neck area may need a mask.  Masks are used:

  • to make it easier for a patient to stay still
  • to help keep the head from moving so that the patient is in the  exact same position for each treatment
  • so any markings can be drawn on the mask, not their skin
