Professor Jessica McDonald of Radiologic Technology took her class on a field trip to the Busch Gardens Animal Care Center. Students explored the x-ray reading room and reviewed x-rays of a cheetah and a lorikeet, as veterinarians explained how they acquire x-rays of specific animals. While zoological radiology is different in many aspects from what these students are learning, there are similarities. On the field trip, students wore shirts with the phrase: “ALARA drop it, drop it low”.  ALARA is a term used in radiology that means: “As Low As Reasonably Achievable”, emphasizing that technicians want to minimize radiation exposure as much as possible for patients and themselves.
