Several Keiser University College of Golf students recently volunteered their time to support the 2016 Florida Special Olympics State Golf Tournament which was held at the Disney World Magnolia Golf Course in Orlando.
As play commenced, 200 athletes playing in all five levels of Special Olympics golf were thankful for the support of 80 coaches, 200 volunteers, 30 delegates, and 50 family members from all over the state of Florida. Keiser University students Dan Hulsey, Aki Sato, and Nick Lewis managed the Short and Long Putt Skills Competition, while Aaron Barnett, Ken Burchette, and Brett Cobb supervised the Pitching Skills Competition.
The event’s dinner, opening ceremonies, and awards presentations acknowledged a variety of athletes and team organizers while also saluting gold medal winners who may qualify for limited spots in the next Special Olympics National Invitational Golf Tournament.
Dr. Eric Wilson, Executive Director of Golf Operations for Keiser University’s College of Golf and Chairman of the Special Olympics Golf Committee for North America coordinated the student volunteer activities along with Akin Joseph, Senior Director of Sport Training and Competition for Florida’s Special Olympics.
Each Keiser University student volunteer was greatly impressed with the organization of the event and specifically with the attitudes and abilities of the Special Olympics golfers. Keiser University College of Golf students look forward to volunteering again at next year’s competition.
My instructors believed in me. They were more than instructors, they tried to get to know you as a person and tried to understand your goals so they could push you towards them. Student services helped me find a job before I even graduated. Everyone was dedicated to my overall success.
