Nutrition and Dietetics Clinical I class students from Keiser University’s Pembroke Pines campus recently enjoyed delving into physical examinations as they visited the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

The group was provided a tour of the kitchen and learned more about Nutrition Focused Physical Assessments which examine patients for malnutrition before properly fulfilling dietary requests.

Students were able to observe the dietitian assessing a patient by feeling their temporal region for muscle wasting, checking for “fat pads” under the eyes, testing hand grip strength and measuring mid-arm circumference. In addition, the dietitian examined for dehydration by “pinching” the skin slightly, feeling the hair for dryness, and inspecting the mouth and fingernails for signs of nutrient deficiencies.
